Through the New Jersey Society of CPAs Mentor Program, members encourage and guide our scholarship recipients as they make the transition from high school to college and then ultimately into the accounting profession. The Mentor Program provides an invaluable opportunity for students to learn about the profession from the inside and to begin to build a network of professional contacts.
In our unique one-on-one Mentor program, experienced, successful CPAs share their time and expertise with students interested in learning more about what it means and takes to be an accountant and about the career opportunities that exist in accounting.
Goals of the Mentor Program include the building of mutually beneficial relationships, the education of the participants on the various aspects of the accounting profession and providing the access to a network of professional guidance. The Mentor program is rewarding for both mentors and students. Each can benefit by practicing leadership and communication skills, identifying and achieving goals and ensuring professional growth.
When asked, most successful business people will say that there were one or two people in their lives who gave them inspiration and the confidence to follow their dreams. Often, this process took place during their childhood, young adult years, or even early on in their careers. Business people say those individuals who inspired them the most were often teachers, relatives, coaches or non-family members, who, for one reason or another, showed a genuine interest in them and in their lives.
Mentoring relationships can certainly have a powerful, positive impact on a person and his or her career. Not having a mentor will not necessarily deter you from achieving great success in your life. However, having a mentor - someone who is truly focused on you and is genuinely interested in your professional development and well being - is a tremendous benefit.
